Exercise in Word Stress

Exercise in Word Stress

If the word has more than one syllable, we give stress to one of the syllables. There are lots of examples of how to point out what syllable is given stress. Hereare a few. They might look silly, but they are effective:

We do this in three ways:

1. Make it louder          Government

2. Make it longer           G  o  v  ernment

3. Make it higher           Gov

.                                               ernment

We can show stress with circles; the bigger circles show the stressed syllables.

Compare the stress patterns of the following words:

1. On Saturdays

O    0    0

2. here today, gone tomorrow

o   O                 o   O     o

3. in the desert  but a deserted beach

O   o                     0   O   o

4. early afternoon

O    0  o  o     O

Chose the word that matches the stress to compete the following sentences:

energy, relax, concentrating, energetic, morning, remainder, evening, clearer, ability, afternoon.

A morning person or an evening person?

I guess I’m a Oo…person as I always work better before midday. My mind is …Oo…then and I have more…Ooo. In the …ooO…and for the …oOo…… of the day I have more difficulty …Oooo… as my mind is slower and I just want to…oO…..

My …Oo…on the other hand, is an …Oo person who prefers to sleep late and work at night. She feels most …ooOo……from 10pm to midnight and I envy her …oOoo…to stay out late at parties.
